Late last year Jo from Brookford Kitchen Diaries started her BKD Cookbook Club. I didn’t join in at the time, as I had a bit too much happening, but planned that I would start in January, and today is the day. Jo is providing a linkup with a theme, for bloggers as a monthly celebration of cookbooks and recipe blogs. The theme for January is ‘healthy eating’.
I Quit Sugar: Simplicious by Sarah Wilson
Don’t you just love that cover? It jumped out at me when Simplicious was first published in 2015, and as I had been a fan of Sarah for many years, and had followed her I Quit Sugar program, I didn’t hesitate the take it home.
For a period of time, when Simplicious was first published, it was my bible. I haven’t referred to it for a while, but have continued to cook my favourites. When I knew BKD Cookbook post was due, I decided to get reacquainted with it, and have read it cover to cover.
Simplicious is one of those recipe books that has a huge amount of reading, other than recipes. I have loved diving into it again, and have made a list of recipes to try, that I haven’t as yet tried. This re-read reminded me of how much I love this book, and will definitely be using it more often and re-visiting some of the delicious, and at times, a little unusual recipes.
There are so many beautiful and creative pages in Simplicious, with many of them being works of art. This is the kind of recipe book that you couldn’t resist reading, even if you didn’t plan on quitting sugar.
Who couldn’t love this photo and dress featuring vegetables.
Simplicious is more than just a book with low sugar recipes. There are of course sugar free sweets, but also main meals and one pot meals suitable for families both large and small. I have been using it for ten years now and it’s usually the first book I refer to, when looking for a new recipe that I know will be healthy.
Following are just a few of the inclusions:
Traditional recipes reimagined with no sugar included
Nutritious main meals
Bowls of Abundance
One Pot Meals
Meals to rebalance gut health
Sustainable cooking
Over the years, I’ve made many recipes from this book, that have become favourites in our house. My partner and I are a little divided on our preferences. Because I’m mostly vegetarian, I don’t eat the meat meals that he loves, and because no sugar’ isn’t his thing, he doesn’t love everything that I make that is no sugar. However, he does have a few favourites.
Click on the images below for recipes:
Sugar Free Raspberry Muffins: I change the fruit around, using any type of berries and often add a banana to the recipe. I love them with blackberries and banana, just using frozen blackberries. This recipe is on high rotation for my partner’s work lunchbox.

Paleo Inside-Out Bread: Along with the Raspberry Muffins, this is probably my most used recipe from this book. It’s a great replacement for bread. I always have a batch in the freezer divided into slices, so I can grab a slice when needed. I love it toasted with pumpkin soup, or poached eggs. Just toasted with tomato is also a favourite. It’s yummy both fresh and toasted.

Skillet Fish ‘n’ Superslaw: I love this very simple salmon recipe, but make a few changes, as there are many foods that I either can’t eat or don’t like to eat. I left out spices, as I’m a bland eater, but you can add your favourite spices.
Below is my version:
1 bunch of broccolini or a head of broccoli
300g salmon
250g bag coleslaw mix
2 baby new potatoes, very thinly sliced
2 tspns coconut oil
sea salt and ground pepper
lemon juice to serve
Preheat over to 200
Line a baking tray with baking paper
In a large bowl, toss together to broccolini, coleslaw mix, potato, and oil, season with salt and pepper
Divide the salmon into two portions. Spread the coleslaw nix over half of the prepared tray, and place the fillets, on top.
Bake 12-15 mins
Serve with a squeeze of lemon

A few yummies - all sugar free

I remember this book - the cover was so clever. I'd already given up sugar - I had PCOS and pre-diabetes and was advised to look into the impact of sugar so read David Gillespie's Sweet Poison. Sarah Wilson popularised it all for sure. The recipes look great.
Jennifer, The recipes all look really good. Thank you for your weekend coffee share.
