Recently we had a weekend getaway at Ballarat in Central Victoria. On the way home we decided to go via the historic town of Clunes. Situated in the area of the historic Victorian Goldfields, Clunes was the site of the first registered gold discovery in 1850. Many Australian movies have been filmed there, due to it’s Victorian architectural style streetscape.
These days, Clunes is a quiet town, for most of the year. That changes on the weekend of the Clunes Booktown Festival, which is held each year on the first weekend of May. On that weekend, Clunes is packed with booklovers, and has now been given International Booktown Status.
As we were driving around the town, we noticed there was a heritage walk. I love history and I love walking, so I can never resist a walk in an historic area. This walk at just over 6k took us through the area where gold had been discovered.
This was a beautiful walk, on a sunny winter day, which took us past all the points of interest of Clunes. The plaques explained the gold mining in the area and the equipment used to mine the gold. The photos below tell the story of our walk.
Of course, if there is fun to be had, Oscar is usually there
